The Department of Education (ED) started sending FAFSA reminder emails as a part of a winter campaign. There are six versions of the email for each type of student and parent: dependent and independent Pell eligible students; dependent and independent non-Pell eligible students; Pell eligible parents; and non-Pell eligible parents. Each email varies slightly based on type, but each email includes the following information:
- Act now: If you’re going to school between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, and need federal financial aid, renew your FAFSA form as soon as possible.
- Take advantage of first-come, first-served state aid money: Many state programs eventually run out of funds. Learn your state’s FAFSA deadline, check your school’s website, or contact your school’s financial aid office for state and school deadlines.
- Download the myStudentAid mobile app: Find it at the Apple App Store or Google Play to complete the FAFSA form anytime, from anywhere.
- Have tax information handy: If you’re eligible, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically transfer 2018 tax information into your FAFSA form. You’ll need your and your parents’ Social Security numbers, birth dates, tax filing statuses, and addresses.
Institutions can follow up with institution-specific email communication as well. The full announcement and email attachments are below.

Subject: 2020–21 FAFSA Winter Email Campaign
Starting the week of Feb. 3, 2020 we began sending emails to 2019–20 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filers (and parents of dependent 2019–20 FAFSA filers) who have not yet submitted a 2020–21 FAFSA form.
The goal of the email campaign is to remind customers that the 2020–21 FAFSA form is available and should be completed soon for those going to school between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. Students and parents can complete and submit the 2020–21 FAFSA form electronically via fafsa.gov or via the Apple or Android version of the myStudentAid mobile app using the myFAFSA function.
Eligible students and parents who have a valid email address in the Central Processing System will receive an email at some point between now and early March. Students and parents may receive different messages based on certain factors. The specific email text is attached to this notice for your reference.
We encourage you to use language from the attached messages in your own communications.
