Ongoing and Updated FAFSA Issues

The Department of Education continues to work on FAFSA bugs and issues.  According to the Issues Alerts page, there are currently 17 open issues and 48 that have been resolved.  The list of issues impacts both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 cycles, unless otherwise noted.

Open Issues

FAFSA Form

  • Some school names are truncated on College Search page (Added Jan. 4, 2024; workaround)
  • Graduate students with Pell-eligible SAI presented incorrect Pell Grant eligibility information on FAFSA submission confirmation emails and pages (Added Jan. 11, 2024; workaround)
  • Spouse contributor invitation page does not appear after user changes marital status from married filing jointly to married filing separately (Added Feb. 2, 2024; workaround)
  • Student unable to proceed past Student Identity and Information page when mailing address section is blank (Added Feb. 2, 2024; workaround)
  • Students are unable to invite parents with no SSN that have a foreign country address (Updated December 16, 2024; workaround)
  • Student with no SSN that exited FAFSA form before “State of Legal Residency” question unable to continue form or start new form (Updated October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Users with no SSN who have ITIN must manually enter financial information in form (Added March 20, 2024)
  • Students who select a Freely Associated State as their state of legal residence and then update to a non-Freely Associated State are stuck in a loop (Added October 27, 2024; workaround)

FAFSA Submission Summary

  • SAI not calculated due to missing family size (Updated Nov. 12, 2024; Workaround)

FAFSA Corrections

  • Assets are incorrectly removed when completing a correction (Updated April 19, 2024; workaround)
  • Students cannot access their FAFSA submission summary when they have a correction in ‘draft’ status (Added April 19, 2024; workaround)
  • Married parents are unable to modify parent spouse information resulting in them being unable to navigate past the parent financials section (Added April 25, 2024; workaround)
  • Users are able to add inactive schools to their correction (Added April 25, 2024; workaround)
  • Students cannot navigate to the High School Completion page when making a correction (Added May 10, 2024; workaround)
  • Students are able to add additional schools to corrections submitted via the FAFSA Partner Portal (Added July 12, 2024)
  • Users are unable to submit a correction when their form has been processed with a professional judgment (Added November 12, 2024; workaround)
  • Some students and their contributors are continuously looped to Assets page and unable to submit a correction (Added November 12, 2024; workaround)

Other FAFSA Issues

  • Users without an SSN who provide an incorrect date of birth are unable to change it (Added Nov. 12, 2024; Workaround)

FAFSA Form

  • Parent who re-enters saved FAFSA form must add country again to submit form (Resolved Jan. 14, 2024)
  • FAFSA unable to be submitted if parent contributor has entered value for “Income Tax Paid” greater than “AGI” (Resolved Jan. 14, 2024)
  • Parent or spouse contributor without FSA ID account prevented from creating account while SSA match is pending (Resolved Jan. 14, 2024)
  • Unable to add spouse or other parent as non-required contributor if spouse or other parent does not have SSN (Resolved Feb. 12, 2024)
  • Contributors are unable to enter an invited form from Roles page (Resolved Feb. 12, 2024)
  • Student who incorrectly selects “Eligible noncitizen” on FAFSA form prevented from completing and submitting form after correction (Resolved March 8, 2024)
  • Parent with no SSN unable to start FAFSA form for student or contribute to an existing form (Resolved March 8, 2024)
  • Federal school codes for inactive schools or locations presented to students on FAFSA form prior to Jan. 6, 2024 (Resolved March 8, 2024)
  • Parent with foreign legal residence unable to submit FAFSA form when parent has not filed taxes due to earning no income (Interim resolution/no longer occurring for parents Feb. 9, 2024; full resolution March 8, 2024)
  • Students unable to save or submit FAFSA form when entering an A-number that ends in zero (Resolved March 8, 2024)
  • Some students with birth year of 2000 are continuously looped to Student Unusual Circumstances page (Resolved March 8, 2024)
  • User with no SSN invited as contributor to form encountering error (Short-term and long-term resolutions as of March 25, 2024)
  • Confirm account settings does not continue past first page for user with foreign address and no error message shown (Resolved July 12, 2024)
  • Users with a foreign tax filing status are unable to submit the FAFSA form (Added & resolved Aug. 9, 2024)
  • Dashboard “My Activity” card component not loading on Safari and Edge browsers when form exists for user (Resolved Aug. 9, 2024)
  • Saved but not submitted FAA corrections are incorrectly appearing to students and contributors (Resolved September 13, 2024)
  • Married student or parent who does not provide spouse’s information before leaving 2024–25 FAFSA form will not be able to complete and submit form upon re-entry (Resolved October 18, 2024)
  • Users submitting from Review Form section without signing (Resolved October 18, 2024)
  • FAFSA application status is “In progress” even when user is ready to submit FAFSA (Resolved October 18, 2024)
  • Parents with last name “Null” are unable to access an invitation or submit a FAFSA form (Resolved October 27, 2024)
  • Parent unable to access FAFSA despite starting application on behalf of student (Resolved October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Contributors with a pending SSA pending match status are unable to access a FAFSA invitation (Resolved October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Students who are invited to the FAFSA form by a parent are not seeing the invitation in My Activity (Resolved October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Users with a military address are unable to submit a FAFSA form (Resolved October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Student or parent who returns to saved FAFSA form requiring contributors has signature removed upon return without changing any information (Resolved October 27, 2024; workaround)
  • Contributors with a pending SSA match status are unable to accept a FAFSA invitation (Resolved December 8, 2024; workaround)
  • Users are receiving confirm settings email and pop-up page too frequently (Resolved December 8, 2024; workaround)
  • Married contributors who filed jointly with their current spouse are being required to invite a non-required contributor to the form (Resolved December 8, 2024; workaround)

FAFSA Submission Summary

  • SAI calculated on submit without assets when AGI exceeds 60k threshold (Resolved, March 13, 2024)
  • FAFSA Card incorrectly showing application expiration date messaging (Resolved May 13, 2024)
  • Submission summary does not provide messaging to students who are not Pell eligible (Resolved October 18, 2024; Workaround)

FAFSA Corrections

  • Some contributors cannot add assets nor submit a correction (Resolved April 14, 2024)
  • Applicant encounters an error when starting a correction and cannot view the FAFSA form (Resolved April 25, 2024)
  • Users who manually entered tax information cannot submit a correction (Resolved April 25, 2024)
  • Gray signature box on Review Form page is causing confusion to some users who are uncertain on how to apply their signature (Added as resolved May 10, 2024)
  • Primary Destination Point Administrators cannot submit corrections in the FAFSA Partner Portal (Resolved July 9, 2024)
  • Action required status incorrectly displaying for corrections submitted via the FAFSA Partner Portal (Resolved Aug. 9, 2024)
  • Non-student contributors are unable to submit a correction (Resolved December 8, 2024; workaround)
