Accessing the NSLDS FAT001 Report: Features, Request Instructions, and Key Updates

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) has released the FAT001 Financial Aid History report, which contains important student information such as grant & loan eligibility, defaults, overpayments, and loan history. The latest edition of the NSLDS Transfer Student Monitoring & Financial Aid History User Guide and Record Layouts is also available on the Federal Student Aid website, offering instructions on how to use the Transfer Student Monitoring (TSM) online, request Financial Aid History (FAH), complete the batch process between both systems. The outline below contains the most important details:

Purpose of the FAT001 Report

  • This report helps institutions calculate the amount and type of Title IV aid that students are eligible for by providing grant history and loan history
  • It also notifies schools when a student has defaulted on a Title IV loan and any requirement to an overpayment of Title IV aid
  • The FAT001 Report format is the same as the Transfer Student Monitoring Alert/Financial Aid History Batch File Layout, which includes:
    • Aggregate, Perkins, Flags Record (Detail Record Type 1)
    • Name History Record (Detail Record Type 2)
    • Overpayment Record (Detail Record Type 3)
    • Grant Payment Record (Detail Record Type 4)
    • Loan Detail Record (Detail Record Type 5)

How to Request the FAT001 report

  • Log into the NSLDS Professional Access webpage
  • Click the ‘Financial Aid History Report (FAT001)’ under the ‘School tab‘ to request the report
  • Report requests must include a valid Student Aid Internet Gateway (SAIG) TG mailbox
  • Enter your preferred format (extract file or a formatted report) for receiving the information
  • The report will be delivered in the following formats:
    • FAHEXTOP – Extract format
    • FAHREPOP – Report format

Managing Student Data

  • Users must select ‘Add Person‘ to add one or multiple students’ information
  • There is a 50-student cap for each report
  • Required student data for the FAT001 request includes:
    • Social Security Number (SSN)
    • First Name
    • Last Name
    • Date of Birth (DOB)
  • A ‘Delete‘ button is available to remove a record from the request if the student information is incorrect or the financial aid history is no longer required
