On August 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education announced the re‑establishment of a computer matching program with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This initiative, governed by the Privacy Act of 1974 (as amended by the Computer Matching and Privacy Protection Acts of 1988 and 1990) and further guided by OMB rules on matching programs, ensures that applicants for Title IV federal student aid meet the required eligibility criteria under the Higher Education Act of 1965.
This re‑established matching program will allow seamless data sharing between the Department and SSA, strengthening the verification process for student aid applicants and helping to protect the integrity of federal aid resources.
