Application for Participation in the Work Colleges Program

The U.S. Department of Education recently released an Electronic Announcement outlining the application process for colleges that want to participate in the Work Colleges Program under the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program for the 2026–27 award year.

What the Work Colleges Program Is
The Work Colleges Program is part of the federal work-study framework and allows institutions with established work-learning-service programs to integrate structured work experiences into students’ education while leveraging federal funding. Participating schools must comply with the requirements of Section 448 of the Higher Education Act and relevant federal regulations.

Note: The Work Colleges Application is not an application to participate in the FWS Program.

Key Application Deadlines

  • New schools (first-time applicants) aiming to join the program for 2026–27 had a deadline of October 31, 2025.
  • Returning schools currently participating must submit their applications no later than March 2, 2026.

These deadlines apply to both the electronic submission and the original signed paper copy signed by the institution’s chief executive officer (e.g., President, Chancellor, Director, Owner).

How to Apply
Interested institutions must submit a completed “Institutional Application and Agreement for Participation in the Work Colleges Program” through the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) website. Once logged in, schools can access the application under the Campus-Based section and follow the instructions provided there. In addition to the online form, a printed copy must be signed by the school’s CEO and mailed by the deadline.

What Happens After Submission
Approved applications will be confirmed via email to the school’s financial aid administrator in April 2026. The institution’s 2026–27 Statement of Account will reflect its Work Colleges award, increasing its Federal Work-Study funds accordingly.
