Education Department Partners with HHS and State Department to Manage School Safety Grants and Foreign Funding Reporting

The U.S. Department of Education has announced new partnerships with other federal agencies as part of an effort to streamline the administration of certain education programs. The agreements involve the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of State, which will assume responsibility for specific functions previously managed by the Education Department.

Under the new arrangement, HHS will oversee grant programs related to school safety and community engagement. The State Department will manage systems that track foreign gifts and contracts involving U.S. colleges and universities. According to the Department of Education, placing these responsibilities with agencies that have related expertise could help improve coordination and efficiency.

Supporters of the initiative say the changes may reduce administrative overlap across federal agencies and allow programs to be managed by departments with more specialized experience. Others have raised concerns that shifting responsibilities between agencies could complicate oversight and make it harder to maintain consistent federal education policy.

The Department of Education stated that it will continue overseeing its primary responsibilities, including federal student aid programs and civil rights enforcement, while working with partner agencies to implement the new agreements.
