Comment Request: 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The U.S. Department of Education has opened a public comment period regarding the 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This notice was published as part of the federal government’s required review process under the Paperwork Reduction Act, which ensures that information collected from the public is necessary and not overly burdensome.

Through this comment request, the Department is seeking feedback on the overall information collection process. This includes the time it takes to complete the form, the method of submission, and the correction process. Public input helps the Department evaluate whether updates or improvements are needed before final approval for the 2027-28 cycle is granted.

Stakeholders including students, families, institutions, and financial aid professionals are encouraged to review the notice and submit feedback. Public comments play an important role in shaping the future of the FAFSA and ensuring the application process works effectively for everyone it serves.

The 2027–28 FAFSA form has been updated to reflect ongoing feedback from students and families. Changes primarily focus on simplifying question and response options to be more easily readable and understandable. FSA has also amended the tax filing question to accommodate users who file income tax returns in both the United States and Puerto Rico or another U.S. territory.

Additionally, the following enhancements will be implemented to the 2027-28 online FAFSA form:

  • Students’ data will be pre-populated from previous FAFSA forms, allowing for a much faster experience for returning students.
  • Parents with multiple children applying for federal student aid will be able to reuse their information across all applications instead of being required to reenter it for every child.

Interested persons are invited to submit comments on or before April 14, 2026.
