Federal Student Aid (FSA) has issued an important notice for schools that use EDExpress, advising institutions to review updated PC and system requirements before installing the 2027–28 version of the software. The announcement serves as an early reminder that technology changes are coming and schools should begin planning now to avoid installation or compatibility issues.
What’s Changing?
FSA is preparing for a significant technology modernization in EDExpress 2027–28, including:
- Migration from a Microsoft Access database to SQL Server
- Conversion of EDExpress to a native 64-bit application
- Updated hardware and software requirements to support the new platform
- Additional technical guidance that will be released prior to the 2027–28 software launch.
Why It Matters
These updates represent the most significant infrastructure changes to EDExpress in years. Financial aid offices that rely on EDExpress should begin coordinating with their campus IT departments now to:
- Review workstation and server compatibility
- Confirm support for the upcoming SQL Server database environment
- Plan for any required operating system or hardware upgrades
- Ensure sufficient time for testing before the 2027–28 processing cycle begins.
Note: EDExpress 2027–28 will be available for download in late September 2026, but it does not need to be installed until a school begins processing for 2027–28. These enhancements will have no impact on processing for 2026–27.
