The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the availability of the initial 2027–28 Federal School Code (FSC) List of Participating Schools on October 30, 2026. The list identifies postsecondary institutions participating in Title IV federal student aid programs and provides the school codes students use when completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).
Students enter these codes on the FAFSA to designate which institutions should receive their processed financial aid application information.
Availability of the Federal School Code List
The FSC List is updated quarterly and is available in two formats:
- Excel: A searchable file containing the most current Federal School Code information.
- PDF: A downloadable reference list of participating institutions.
Students can also search for participating schools directly on FAFSA.gov.
Updating School Information
FSA reminds institutions of the importance of maintaining accurate school names and addresses.
Institutions needing to update their information must use the Electronic Application for Approval to Participate in the Federal Student Financial Aid Programs (E-App).
Schools can also customize how their names appear on the Federal School Code List and FAFSA.gov by selecting the Update/Report Information – Federal School Code option in the E-App.
Important considerations include:
- School names are limited to 40 characters in the E-App.
- Changes to Federal School Code addresses require assistance from the institution’s School Participation Section.
- Institutions may request Federal School Codes for approved additional locations through the E-App.
- Each Federal School Code can be associated with only one city and state.
Additional Information
Institutions are encouraged to review their information in the newly released list and submit any necessary updates to ensure accurate school identification during the 2027–28 FAFSA application cycle.
For assistance with the Title IV Participation Application, institutions may contact CaseTeams@ed.gov.
