FAFSA Real-Time Fraud Detection

The U.S. Department of Education announced that it will reprocess certain 2026–27 FAFSA transactions following a technical issue that temporarily prevented fraud evaluation results from being included on some FAFSA forms.

The issue affected FAFSA transactions processed between June 29 and July 6, 2026. The Department corrected the issue on July 6, and fraud evaluations have operated normally since that time.

To address the affected records, Federal Student Aid conducted a one time fraud evaluation of transactions received during the impacted period. Those transactions will be reprocessed using Reprocessing Reason Code 18.

FSA expects the reprocessing to be completed on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Financial aid offices may see new ISIRs generated as a result of this reprocessing. Institutions should be aware of Reprocessing Reason Code 18 when reviewing newly received FAFSA transactions and determine whether the updated information affects any previously completed or pending financial aid processes.

Institutions should continue to monitor their normal ISIR processing and review affected student records as appropriate.
